October 27th at 8 pm „ensemble crossart“ will be giving a concert portraying Toshio Hosokawa at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart’s concert hall.

„ensemble crossart“ is an ensemble for contemporary music and has been founded by a couple of lecturers of Musikhochschule Stuttgart. One of the ensemble’s central concepts is to combine contemporary instrumental music with other media and art forms.

The program of Toshio Hosokawa’s portrait is multifaceted concerning instrumentation (three solo pieces, a trio and three ensemble pieces with conductor) as well as the composer’s compositional bouts:

The 3 solo pieces „Sen II“ for violoncello, „Atemlied“ for alto flute and „Cloudscape“ for organ, interpreted by Prof. Jörg-Hannes Hahn, derive from three of Hosokawa’s different composing eras.

The same applies to the three ensemble pieces: „Slow Dance“ (vl, vc, fl, cl, pf, perc) originates from 1996 whereas „Drawing“ (vl, vla, vc, fl, ob, cl, pf, perc) is a 21st century piece. „A Song from far away“ (vl, vla, vc, fl, cl, perc) derives from the motif „In Nomine“ which is a rather untypical composing technique within Hosokawa’s œuvre. This is juxtaposed to an example of Hosokaw’s composing of the early 90s with the piece „Vertical Time Study II“ for saxophone, piano and percussion.

The performance of the early work „Sen II“ from 1986 marks a special highlight of the concert: no recording is available and the piece itself is rarely presented in concert since the score is hard to find.

Especially for this concert Manasori Taki, contemporary japanese calligrapher, has created 7 calligraphies inspired by 7 of Hosokawa’s compositions. They are about 7 Haikus by Issa, a japanese Haiku author from the Edo-era. These Haikus will be recited by Claudia Schojan.

Toshio Hosokawa will be present and give an introduction to his music.
